Who's Telling The Truth?
On July 30th, 1997, The Washington Times published an article about the Pensacola Outpouring. Below is an excerpt from that article:
By Julia Duin
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
July 30, 1997
PENSACOLA, Fla.
. . . . The church was less than delighted when the revival's chief opponent, Hank Hanegraaff, the president of the Christian Research Institute in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., criticized Brownsville during an April 4 "Larry King Live" telecast on CNN.
. . . . After Mr. Hanegraaff compared the Pensacola church to the mass suicide of Heaven's Gate cult members, Mr. Kilpatrick denounced the CRI president from his pulpit two days later.
. . . . "If you want to keep any kind of a semblance of a ministry, you better back off from this revival and what God is doing," Mr. Kilpatrick said April 6. "I am going to prophesy to you that if you don't ... within 90 days the Holy Ghost will bring you down. And I speak that as a man of God."
. . . . Mr. Hanegraaff obtained a tape of those remarks for his "Bible Answer Man" talk show. He started playing it on religious stations nationwide, including WAVA-FM (105.1) in Arlington, Va., styling the "prophecy" as a 90-day countdown to his possible demise.
. . . . Within a week, the Rev. Thomas Trask, general superintendent for Mr. Kilpatrick's denomination, the 2.3-million-member Assemblies of God, called Mr. Kilpatrick with an ultimatum.. . . . "I called John and told him, 'You cannot be doing that,'" Mr. Trask said. "We don't believe in [prophesying against people]. ... That's not scriptural. I said to John, 'When you have to start defending revival, there is something wrong. I will not permit you to do that.'"
. . . . On June 17, Mr. Kilpatrick backed out
of the spiritual showdown and called Mr. Hanegraaff to apologize.
Shortly after this article appeared, the following message was
posted on the Brownsville web site:
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:
For the past few weeks I have displayed Pastor
John Kilpatrick's apology to Mr. Hank Hanegraaff of the Christian Research Institute. I
believe our viewers needed to see this and to know that Pastor Kilpatrick realized his
mistake and communicated his apology to the right people including the visitors to our Web
Site. As I take this announcement off the site, I do have one final comment regarding the
incident. I just read an article by Julia Duin of the Washington Times (published July 30,
97) that talked about the revival and its impact. While I enjoyed reading the article,
I do want to clarify one statement in the article that was not correct. A statement was
made that the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Rev. Thomas Trask, called
Pastor John Kilpatrick and gave him an ultimatum regarding the situation with Hank
Hanegraaff. There was no such ultimatum. When Pastor Kilpatrick called Superintendent
Trask and informed him that he was going to issue an apology, Superintendent Trask readily
agreed with this course of action but he never gave Pastor Kilpatrick any ultimatum as
Julia's article stated. In closing, I believe you have been provided the information
you needed to see regarding this incident. My earnest desire now is to move on and report
to you via our Web Site all the miraculous things God is doing in this revival.
Thank you,
Dr. Carl Sightler
Julia Dunn was contacted about what was said in
the interview. She said, "I typed everything word for word as Trask dictated it to
me."
Who's telling the truth here? Keep in mind that
this is a secular newspaper and they would not care one way or the other what Thomas Trask
said and would have no reason to lie.
